OUR STAND
A Plea for Consideration
There was a time,
not too long ago in Nigeria when despair and hopelessness was the
bane of existence, a time...

We, the New Democrats (ND) believe that
intellectual and entrepreneurial ballast is the key to success for
any political administration. Recent events in the Nigerian
political landscape clearly show that a political party and indeed a
government that loses sight of the "big picture" can
easily be swept off course by events, driven by sectional
fundamentalism and...Read

Thanks to a wealth of oil and human resources, Nigeria has the
potential to become one of Africa’s leading economies. But years of
mismanagement and social division have paralysed the "giant"
of Africa. The current real
GDP growth of 3.2%
falls far short of the 6-10% promised at the
start of the present administration,
and of the 7-10% growth required to
make a significant dent in poverty and to achieve the development
goals for 2015...Read

A Work in Progress
ND is a work in progress .
Because ND is dedicated to the principles of: individual freedom,
responsibility and respect in the framework of a just and prosperous
society and political freedom. We are bound by the Constitution and
committed to the pursuit of equality of opportunity for all
Nigerians, the enhancement of our unique and diverse ethnicity, the
enhancement of our unique and diverse cultural community, and the
preservation of the Nigerian identity in a global society. ND has
identified the following problems with the Nigerian nation for which
it proffers solutions;
An economy sapped by corruption
resulting in too much economic stagnation and instability, too
little investment in education and skills, and in the application of
new technologies, too few opportunities to find jobs, start new
businesses or become self-employed, too narrow an industrial base
and too little sense of common purpose in the workplace or across
the nation and finally too much crime. |

REFORMING
NIGERIAN ECONOMY
Nigeria must overcome its crisis and continue
to grow. First we have to reform the economic system to
increase its efficiency and responsiveness. Second we must
bring about an internal adjustment, reforming the power sector
and improving movement of resources all over and particularly
to the rural areas to ensure the economic empowerment of the
rural populace including women, increase domestic market
competition and improve the organization and the quality of
investment program in vital economical sectors in all part of
the country. Third there has to be substantial external
adjustment.
DEVELOPING A KNOWLEDGE-DRIVEN NIGERIAN ECONOMY
THROUGH
PARTNERSHIP
AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Technological
advances and globalization are gathering pace.
Nigerians, in spite of being suffused with abundant human and
material resources, enjoy the dubious distinction of being
among the poorest people in the Commonwealth of Nations. With
a population of 140+ million people, the country is one of the
most populous countries in the Commonwealth, third only to
India which has a population of 997,515,000 and Bangladesh
with 127,669,000.
Nigeria’s wealth and power comes
from the control of physical assets - land, oil, iron and
steel. But in the 21st century, this alone
cannot continue to happen. The other
main source of value and competitive advantage in the
new economy is human and intellectual capital,
like in the West and now in Asia. With a
market population of 140
million people, Nigeria, in theory has the capacity to make a
successful transition into a truly knowledge driven economy
through partnership and
entrepreneurship.
